What are the manifest and latent (dys)functions of going to school?/Week5/Sohn HyeJeong

Q. What are the manifest and latent (dys)functions of going to schools?

A. The manifest functions of going to school is learning something we need. For example, language, math, science, etc.. Doing this, we can earn basic knowledge. And even, we can get higher position of our society. Education is regarded as the only way to get higher class. And latent function of going to school is socialization. As we going to schools, we can learn how communicate with people, and social rules, morality. If we can do this properly at school, when we get a job, we can communicate with people easily. And manifest dysfunction is bullying at school. In the process of interacting people, people can get bullied and can get hurt. Finally, latent dysfunction of going to school is standardized education can lead to loss of individuality. To educate effectively, people made standard process of education. But It ignores individuality. After taking the standardized education, people become similar.

Politics / Week5 / Kwon Ah Yeon

1. summary

Politics has a great influence in society. Politics is the whole process of making socio-economic decisions within a group of human beings. In addition to the large scope of a nation, there is a system of politics in various groups such as schools, businesses and religions. The production, consumption and distribution of resources in the course of social life are all related to politics. Human desires are infinite, but the resources to fulfill them are limited, so the struggle over resources is politics. The means of this struggle is power. There are various forms of government, such as monarchy, democracy, totalitarianism, oligarchy, communism, and new government, which govern their own groups in their respective forms.

2. What is interesting

It was interesting that under the political system in which the vote was conducted, people's chances of voting depend on their gender, age, race and education, and their access to politics vary. Not only South Korea but the United States also found that older people were more likely to vote than younger people. The most memorable story was the prediction of the voting system through the attitude of gender equality. It has been shocking that white men are more likely to vote for conservative candidates to avoid job security threats by women and minorities.

3. Discussion Point

I wonder if there are other factors that affect voting patterns. The current voting age in South Korea is 18. It is because it has been assured of an age consensus that the suffrage of teenagers should be extended so that they can vote and voice on issues directly related to them, such as education and labor. I want to know how low election age affects politics and voting results through examples from other countries that have already been able to vote from an early age.

Q: What examples of inequality leading to conflict can we think of?

A: I would like to announce that the inequality between welfare and taxation has led to economic conflict. Our country belongs to a country where income redistribution is not active. The problem is that we can't solve this problem through taxation. Despite some improvement through welfare, however, the size of welfare policy for low-income people is very small and inadequate for poverty. I believe that the welfare and tax policies for low-income families should be improved to resolve inequality and resolve economic conflicts.

Q
What examples of inequality leading to conflict can we think of?

A
I think the most common inequality is the gap between rich and poor. Adults have conflicts to get more people with less people with more, and people with fewer people to steal from them. The gap between the rich and the poor is not only about conflict among adults, but also between children. You can easily find students fighting with each other about their own items being more expensive.

Q.What examples of inequality leading to conflict can we think of ?

I think the biggest conflict is on the economic side. The government requires the poor to improve their situation and the rich to protect their interests and property. This is a conflict that comes from economic inequality. This will be something the government will try to solve, but the poor and the rich are the people and cannot listen to the opinion of only one side. But they don't back down at all, so the conflict gets worse and economic inequality gets stuck.

From a long-term perspective, you can develop yourself. Based on education, they become more knowledgeable and socially empathetic.

Q: What are the manifest and latent (dys)functions of going to school?

A: The manifest function of going to school is that you can learn. Because the school's primary function is in educational activities. On the contrary, the manifest dysfunction of going to school are such things as academic stress and excessive private education costs to prepare for tests.
I think the latent function is to improve social activities. By attending school, I make friends and do social activities, which are just as important as educational activities. I think school violence is a prime example of latent dysfunction.
