Week10/Race and ethnicity/김권수 Kim Kwonsoo

Summary: Assuming that race and ethnicity are "natural" and "absolute," why is there so much difference between my ethnic and ethnic identity? The mutation of racial and ethnic identity across time and space is a very socially created concept of race and ethnicity. The complexity of identity illustrates the need to escape from mutually exclusive and inflexible interpretations of race and ethnicity. This chapter on race and ethnicity first describes the social composition of these two highly constructed concepts and discusses many of the pitfalls, such as prejudice and discrimination associated with them. Racism is a group of people who believe it is in some way distinct from other humans based on physical differences in real or imagined. Individuals are classified as racial groups, not as individuals, who choose where they belong as part of their identity. Race refers to the social characteristics shared by humans. Social characteristics of racial classification include nationality, race, and shared language. Unlike race, ethnicity is usually not allocated externally by others. Ethnicity focuses more on group links to recognized past and culture.

Intersting point: In the meantime, I thought that race and ethnicity were somewhat of the same concept. However, I could tell from this chapter the difference between ethnicity and ethnicity due to external, internal things.

Discussion: Is there a lower race and an superior race? Koreans are strict about white racism, but they are not aware of the racism they are doing. We must reflect deeply on this point and have a new idea
