Q. Is our modern world more peaceful than the past? Can we think of some
examples - or contradictions?
A. I think the modern world is more peaceful than the past. There was World
War I only 100 years ago. At that time, almost a million people died. Thirty
years later, World War II took place, killing thousands of people. There are
also frequent wars. There was the Vietnam War, the Korean War, and so on. The
war that caused many of these casualties in modern times was only as much as
the war in Iraq in 2002 and was less damaging than the war described earlier. I
think the present is more peaceful than in the past, with reduced size and
number of wars.
