Stratification / Week9 / Lim Tae Yi

1. Summary

Stratification means placing people hierarchically in society and is mostly focused on economic areas. There are also layering on different types of inequality, such as economic inequality and gender inequality.
A lot of inequality is common around and sociologists note why it doesn't last and last, and where it started.
People from a functional perspective on layering argue that stratification and inequality are inevitable and helpful to society. It is natural for people of value to take high places and make a lot of money, and they should give competent people the most important positions and offer more rewards.
On the contrary, people from a conflict point of view argue that stratification exacerbates economic inequality and reverses society. They say that these inequalities are not inevitable, but are created and maintained by people.

2. What was interesting / What did you learn

Capitalism was mentioned by talking about stratification and inequality in the article.
I think capitalism is very closely related to economic inequality.
The problems of inequality and stratification, which have continued from the past to the present, have not been resolved. The alternatives that were proposed to be resolved were buried without much effect.
Although I cannot say that I do not unconditionally agree with the opinions of people who advocate functionalism, I think it is counterproductive to society to some extent. In an increasingly competitive society, capitalism seems to play a role in creating more and more economic inequality and making stratification clear.

3. Discussion point

When social classes are divided into upper, middle, and lower levels, economic factors alone cannot be judged. What are the other factors that will measure?
