Race & Ethnicity and Gender / Week10 / Kwon Ah Yeon

1. summary

Racial and ethnicity are different. Race is a concept that classifies humans based on skin color and body characteristics. On the other hand, people classify humans as social characteristics, not physical ones. For example, nationality, religion, language, culture, and tradition are social characteristics.
There are many biological standards that distinguish between races and have changed over time. However, there is a discriminatory trend that discriminates against and prejudices against people according to these races. The prejudice that race is essentially superior or inferior to others is what creates this racism. Apartheid not only ends with discrimination, but also reveals hatred of certain races through war and genocide. Actions such as slavery and genocide that treat a particular race against which they reject can easily be found in history. In recent years, racism has been found in many aspects of society, and racial inequality has not been resolved either.

Discrimination can occur not only in race but also in sex, which stems from the belief that one sex is superior to another. Sexual discrimination can occur in many forms, including physical violence, as well as suppressing women's actions and careers.

2. What is interesting

I could see how complacent and selfish prejudices of mainstreamers who thought their group was superior to their counterparts have oppressed and attacked them. It was interesting to see that there are diverse cultures around us such as Asian demeaning, misogyny, and youth discrimination. It was interesting that the two groups did not end up in conflict, but that they had to unite in order to achieve this.

3. Discussion Point

I think the idea of being superior to the other person creates a culture of discrimination. However, even though society has developed and social awareness has increased, discrimination is still easy to spot. I wonder what sociologists can do to eliminate this culture of discrimination and not discuss friendship and passion among people.
