Week 13 / Aging / 김성희 Kim Seonghui

1. Summary

Aging is a biological and social process in which humans experience and achieve biological and social maturity. Aging is biological and sociological. You can roughly guess how to aging you will be depending on when you were born. Age discrimination exists. It can be targeted at individuals of all ages, but it is mainly teenagers and the elderly. Discrimination against adolescents is mainly a limitation of behavior. Examples include not having the right to vote and judging whether a marriage is possible. On the other hand, ageism varies from limits of behavior to areas of physical abuse. In the United States, despite the success of the social security system to reduce elderly poverty, one unexpected consequence was the increase in poverty for people under 18. This can be explained by conflict theory. Aging can vary depending on race. There is evidence that older black people are more likely to be physically and psychologically abused. On average, weak bones, political and economic resources cause significant racial changes in ethnicity and trajectory by multiple stages or ages that can be observed at all points. It also contributes to an imbalance of life expectancy and health, income, self-confidence age, mortality and disease rates.

2. What did you learn / What was interesting?

People spend a lot of money on make-up and surgery because of the emphasis on youth. However, opposition approaches are taken among adolescents, who try to look a little older than their actual age. In my opinion, these actions are done when you grow up and find yourself. In that case, they will try to find their self-image in the media such as around them or on TV. But most of the people who appear to be adults. Therefore, they wear make-up when they look older because they want to be mature and respected as a complete ego.
One of the stereotypes about the elderly is that they tend to be inflexible and more conservative over time. But it's not true. Rather, older people are very good at changing their views and are often more tolerant as they get older. It was surprising that there were also such studies.

3. Discussion Point

Many people are resistant to aging. They also want to look younger. Why do we view aging negatively?
