Week12 / Social Movement / Soongki Kim

Types of social movements

Summary
Social movements are broad social alliances of people connected through common interests that prevent or influence social change.
Social movement and social movement organization (SMO) are distinct. Social movements are an official component of social movements. Social movements do not need to be formally created and carried out. People of the same mind work together or act separately.
Modern social movements have become possible through the spread of literature and increased mobility of labor due to the industrialization of society.

There are four theories of social movement: Deprivation Theory, Mass-Society Theory, Structural-strain theory, and resource-movement theory.

What was interesting/What did we learn
I became interested in theories related to social movements. The theory of deprivation interpreted that while resources are limited, the person who does not have enough resources is uncomfortable with it and starts social movements because its distribution is not identical to everyone. The Mass-Society theory argues that social movements consist of individuals who feel socially alienated. According to this theory, social movements provide the power and sense of belonging that the members of the movement did not have.

Discussion point
Social movements tend to mobilize more people towards common goals and move toward achieving realistic outcomes, as well as for each limited goal. And I think the main reason for social movements exists to make society peaceful or to eliminate negative aspects. So, is it a good country for people to live in?
