Social Movement / Week12 / sukyung Song

Social Movement

1. Summary

Social Movement: People linked to common interests for social change form broad social alliances. Social movements can aim for group or social changes at an individual level. It does not have to be official and social movements are distinct.

-Step 3 of the social movement
Social movements are said to appear for various reasons, merge and become bureaucratic. They can take various paths, including the success of the movement, failure, joint propaganda of the leader, oppression by larger groups, and establishment of a movement within the mainstream.

- Social movement theory
Defeat Theory: Social movements have their base between deprivation and deprivation. First, it is difficult to explain why groups that form social movements are also deprived of others because most people feel deprived at lower levels or almost always. Second, this theory begins with an inference.

Mass Social Theory: They argue that social movements are not important or are made up of large social individuals who are socially separate.

Structural-strategic: This theory depends on circular logic by partially integrating the theory of deprivation, relying on it, and incorporating social/structural transformations for the fundamental motivations of social movements.

Resource mobilization Theory: Emphasizes the importance of resources in the development and success of social movements. Knowledge, money, media, labor, solidarity, legitimacy, internal and external support of the power elite. The theory argues that social movements develop until the disgruntled individual can mobilize enough resources to take action.

Political process theory: argue that there are three important factors in the formation of motion, such as resistance, organization and political opportunity.

Cultural theory: Based on the theory of political process and resource mobilization, it expands in two ways. First, highlight the importance of mobile culture. Second, try to solve free-lider problem.

2. Interacting

Many social movements are still emerging. I think there are largely long-term and short-term projects in social movements. For example, Independence Movement at the Japanese occupation conducted over a short period of time, but SNS hot ice bucket in Challenge is continuing for years.
Learning various theories about social movement was interesting because it helped me understand the nature of social movement.

3. Discussion

What are the criteria to say that social movements have been successful?

  1. I think what the movement claims is when it is made by law or custom in our society. Also, many people agree with what the movement has claimed and think that it is a success.

  2. I think that the thing that the social movement has done is a measure of the success of the social movement. However, many social movements do not make immediate changes. Social movements are beginning to change gradually as many people in society are aware of the seriousness of the problem and discussing it to solve the problem. I think it is also important that this development process is going on, but I think it is hard to see it as a direct measure of success in social movements.
