Demography/ week14/ 엄서영 Um seoyoung

1. Summary
The most important indicators of demographics are birth and death. Demographers are also interested in the movement of the population. When describing social phenomena, they should be able to convert to demographic indicators first. Demographic analysis is a powerful tool for explaining many sociological phenomena.

2. What was interesting/what did you learn
The strongest predictor of the birth rate was the level of education for women. It is said that the higher the education level, the lower the birth rate. However, reducing the birth rate is not because of education itself but because of connections to other factors that lower the birth rate.
I think so, too. I believe that women's social advancement will lead to a delay in getting married, and childbirth will not be delayed.

3. Discussion point
Korea is currently in a low birthrate. While promoting women's education, is there any way to boost the birth rate?

Family/ week13/ 엄서영 Um seoyoung

1. Summary
Families play a role in producing and socializing children. Some cultures impose a duty on married women to have children. The family life cycle is led by courtship, marriage, children, divorce, death and widow. Family types vary from culture to culture, and sometimes new forms are introduced. A single-parent family, recognized as a new family, believed that single-parent families were immoral in the 1950s, but that belief remained around 25 percent in 1978. Another type is cohabitation. This can be seen as an alternative to marriage, but it is not officially recognized. There are several reasons for choosing cohabitation: testing compatibility before marriage, trying to secure financial security, and wanting to have a marriage when it is not legal, such as gay marriage. Finally, some married couples form childless families on a choice or because of infertility, age, or other factors that prevent reproduction.

2. What was interesting/what did you learn
The cohabitation solves the general reason for cohabiting, but it was interesting that it did not improve the quality or duration of marriage. Individuals living together before the engagement (approximately 43% of all couples) report a slightly lower level of marital satisfaction, commitment and reliability than those living together after the engagement (16.4% of all American couples) and those living together after marriage (40.5% in the United States). Early cohabiting people are also likely to divorce. This difference is generally small, but not due to demographic differences between the three groups.

3. Discussion point
The sense of cohabitation is improving in our country. However, living together does not improve the quality or duration of marriage. Will you cohabitation?

Social Movements/ week12/ 엄서영 Um seoyoung

1. Summary
Social movements are a broad social alliance of people connected through shared interests that block or influence social change.
Social movements don't have to be organized. Multiple alliances can operate individually for common causes and can still be considered social movements. The theories for explaining the development of social movements include deprivation theory, mass social theory, structural transformation theory, resource mobilization theory, political process theory, and cultural theory.

2. What was interesting/what did you learn
Social movements are distinct from social movements, and modern social movements have been made possible through the expansion of the spread of culture and the increase of labor movement due to industrialization of society. I have learned in modern society that there are democratic movements working for political rights, labor movements working for job control, eco- movements related to the environment, peace movements, peace movements, and peace movements.

3. Discussion point
Have you ever been involved in a social movement or are you currently doing it?

Conflict Theory/ week11/ 엄서영 Um seoyoung

1. Summary
Conflict theory assumes interaction, change, competition, structural inequality, degree of inequality, revolution, etc.
The key terms used in the theory of social conflict are class conflict, ideology, social class, deviance, proletariat, bourgeoisie and capitalism.A current example of conflict is social stratification.
According to the conflict theory, the structure of social classification suits the upper class to the lower class. Therefore, it is said that all societies were based on the conflict between oppression and repression classes.

2. What was interesting/what did you learn
The United States is known as a country that values equality, egalitarianism, meritocracy, effort and the pursuit of "American Dream," but it is interesting that social inequality is extremely high. These big inequalities are said to cause increased risk of violent crime and decreased educational opportunities.

3. Discussion point
Conflict theory says. Conflict and competition are inevitable because resources are economical. Is there any way to soften the growing conflict and competition?

Race and Ethnicity/ week10/ 엄서영 Um seoyoung

1. Summary
Race is classified according to morphological characteristics, such as skin color and facial characteristics. Ethnicity is classified as a social trait. There are nationalities, tribes, religious beliefs, a shared language, common culture, and traditional sharing.
Racism includes individual-level racism, structural racism, cultural racism, historical racism, racial profiling, colorist racism, and genocide.
Structural racism is an inequality built into an organization or system. The discrimination of the past has resulted in unconscious prejudice. The above figure shows that even though blacks and Hispanics share the same income as whites, they are less likely to be approved for housing mortgages

2. What was interesting/what did you learn
Although we thought that racial discrimination was less common than in the past, we still felt that the unconscious part of our lives was firmly established. And I knew that racial discrimination could be divided in so many different ways, and I knew that discrimination was happening in different areas.

3. Discussion point
Can't you get rid of racism at all? What should we do to try to narrow the racial gap?

Stratification/ week9/ 엄서영 Um seoyoung

1. Summary
Layering means dividing people into classes in society. Layering has a variety of factors, including economic power, race, and gender. Among them, economic power has the greatest impact. Max Weber divided the layers into three: Power, Property, and Prestige. Modern sociologists use Bever's idea to classify "power, wealth, and fame."

2. What was interesting/what did you learn
It is said that the origin of inequality is the development of "hunters, hounds, and societies" from the "garden, livestock" society. Joel Charon says the reason for the continuing inequality that started then. First, the rich and strong protect the system of inequality. Second, culture teaches acceptance of inequality. Third, people can accept their position in society. Finally, police, courts and prisons work together to protect the inequality system. I also agree with these arguments. This is because punishment in Korea often varies depending on status and economic power even if they commit the same crime.

3. Discussion point
Can we protect the weak by law in a society where social status and economic power are prioritized?

Extra posting/Can china replace US as world’s economic power?/ 엄서영 Um soeyoung

Q.Can china replace US as world’s economic power?

A.
I think it is possible. First, China is the most populous country in the world. That alone has great power. I think it has a big economic market. I think it will be very easy to cross the U.S. if China's own technologies develop a lot in the future.

Extra posting/Why Koreans and Poles value the environment less than Americans, Australian, Chinese or Japanese/ 엄서영 Um soeyoung

Q.Why Koreans and Poles value the environment less than Americans, Australian, Chinese or Japanese

A.Technological development would have been important in order to grow the economy in a small country at first. So the environment would have been considered relatively unimportant. However, in today's Korea, the focus is not just on technological development, but also technology for the environment. Reduction of disposable products or separation of products is also implemented.

Extra posting/why is God in Christianity often portrayed as a male?/ 엄서영 Um soeyoung

Q.why is God in Christianity often portrayed as a male?

A.For a long time, a man was thought to be a man of power, and a man of strong power was considered a man of style. Therefore a God with omnipotent power may have been described as a man.

Deviance/ week7/ 엄서영 Um seoyoung

1. Summary
Deviation is an act that violates cultural norms. Here, norms are social expectations of human behavior. Deviation is divided into two categories: formal deviance and practical deviance. Examples of formal deviance are robbery, theft, rape, murder, and assault. Examples of practical deviance are picking one's nose and burping loudly.

2. What was interesting/what did you learn
The crime statistics part was most interesting. The percentage of people in prisons in the United States is the highest in the world. The U.S. has a high recidivism rate. The reason is that it focuses on keeping people away rather than trying to reform or re-socialize criminals.

3. Discussion point
Unlike the U.S., Korea tends to give opportunities to reform and re-socialize criminals. But is this punishment helpful to our society

Socialization/ Week6/ 엄서영 Um seoyoung

1. Summary
Socialization is the process by which humans prepare for social life. Socialization depends on race, class, gender, religion, and social position. The first socialization takes place in childhood and adolescence, and after the first socialization, specific changes are made in the second society. Socialization is important because if socialization is not done properly, negligence, unhappiness, and deliberate abuse can occur

2. What was interesting / What did you learn
Socialization varies depending on social class." On that basis, I was very interested to see parents explore differences in how they raise their children compared to their social class. I found that children's society really changed according to class, as lower-class parents emphasized their children's fitness and middle-class parents emphasized creativity and independence.

3. Discussion Point
The process of socialization is important enough to live in. What would happen if people who didn't get socialized came into our lives?

Politics/ Week5/ 엄서영 Um seoyoung

1. Summary
Politics is the process of a group of people making socio-economic decisions.
Types of government include Monarchy, Democracy, Totalitarianism, Oligarchy, Communist State, Theocracy, and Theocracy. The Korean government is Democracy. The characteristic of Democracy is that citizens have equal rights and enjoy equal freedom.

2. What was interesting / What did you learn
Politics, gender, age, race, and class change the chances of voting. Women are more likely to vote in developed countries, but their political positions are minimal. Young people are less likely to vote than old people, so politicians are less likely. Racial and ethnic minorities find it difficult to vote in elections

3. Discussion Point
Why is it that women don't get much of a political position? What efforts are needed to raise the voting rate for young people?

Economy/week4/Um seoyoung 엄서영

1.summary
Economics is the use of the environment to meet the physical needs of people.
The economy is related to technological evolution, history and social organization, geography, natural resources, and ecosystems.
Capitalism is an economic system dominated by capital for profit-seeking purposes.
Capitalistic economics developed from five interplay categories: commodities, money, labor, production means, and production.
Socialism is an ideology that values the interests of society as a whole, rather than guaranteeing as much as possible the will and freedom of individual human beings.

2.interesting point
Our country is now a capitalist society. Critics of capitalism believe it has something to do with the unfair distribution of wealth and power.
Of course, as much as the profit you create, as you work, I think it's useless to get paid. However, I think it's a problem that the nation's social structure is becoming rich again, and that it is said that money makes money.

3.discussion point
What kind of economic system do you think would be if the nation with the capitalist system and the communist country were reunified, which would be more equal in socialism and distribution?

Extra Posting/How are bond created though group enjoyment of sports (soccer, baseball, Starcreaft) smililar to bonds created though relious experience?/엄서영 Um seoyoung

Q.How are bond created though group enjoyment of sports (soccer, baseball, Starcreaft) smililar to bonds created though relious experience?

A.
They team up together to collaborate. As a result, if you win, you can share your joys, share your sorrows, and share your feelings.

Extra Point/Why are traffic accidents so high in some countries?/엄서영 Um seoyoung

Q.Why are traffic accidents so high in some countries?

A.I think a country with relatively weak punishment for traffic accidents will have a higher chance of accidents happening. If punishment is weak, I will not be careful, thinking that I can be punished even if there is an accident.

Extra Point/What holds the society together?/ 엄서영 Um seoyoung

Q.What holds the society together?

A.
People themselves stay together to maintain society. They live in social communities, communicate with each other, develop together, and maintain society.

Extra Point/Why study history? Why not just discuss the most modern?/엄서영 Um seoyoung

Q. Why study history? Why not just discuss the most modern theories?

A.
As the saying 'A nation that forgets history has no future,' the past repeats and we must learn from history in order to prepare for the upcoming future and be prepared not to repeat the same mistakes.

Extra Point/What is more important- our genes or our environment./엄서영 Um seoyoung

Q. What is more important- our genes or our environment?

A.
I think our environment can change our genes. This is because the environment and parenting methods have many influensces. Like a child who is loved and raised.

Culture/Week 3/ 엄서영 Um seoyoung

1) Summary

Culture is needed to determine who human beings are difficult to determine only by their biological characteristics. You can differentiate groups or societies through culture. There is  Subculture and Countercultures in culture. For example, a subculture is a small number of cultures, such as one class of culture and military culture.  can be seen as a culture against society. The biggest example is the hippie movement of 1960.

2)What was interesting / What did you learn

It was interesting to see the ethnocentrism that he thought was the best. If you don't understand the culture of another country and think that your culture is the best, you don't think you can see the world widely. So I decided to understand other cultures with a cultural relativism.

3)Discussion Point

Cultural relativism is important to understand the culture of other countries. But should we even understand a culture that threatens human dignity, such as the honnor killing of the Islamic world?
