Culture / Week 3 / 김성희 Kim Seonghui

1. Summary

The culture includes norms, values, beliefs, and symbols. Social scientists take culture as a step forward in human social life. Culture is a way for humans to adjust to the natural world. After World War I and World War II, People are believing in cultural relativism. A subculture is a culture in which a few people share and actively participate within a wider culture. Counterculture is a subculture in which some of its values or norms can challenge or contradict the main culture in which it belongs. Counterculture is included in the subculture. Subculture brings together people of the same mind to have a similar identity.

2. What was interesting / What did you learn

Some understanding of how culture changes began with anthropology. Culture is necessary because our biological nature does not solely determine who we are. Anthropologists view the origin of culture from an evolutionary point of view. People living apart develop and follow cultures. However, these cultures are passed on to others and become their own. Culture is an artificial classification of social factors.

3. Discussion Point

Some view counterculture positively, but others believe that it negatively affects the development of all major cultures. How far should society tolerate anti-culture, which can challenge or contradict major cultures? And what if the main culture is not for universal humanity?

  1. I think it's hard to accept the same culture in all societies. Being anti-cultural can also be their own culture. So I think subculture exists.

  2. The situation will vary depending on the nature of the anti-culture and the culture in which the country accepts it. For example, Korea, which is based on Confucian culture, has traditionally eaten nutritious food, a culture that is morally opposed in many European countries, including Britain. I don't think it's necessary to accept it if it's not socially helpful and if it's not possible because the nation was formed in the beginning.
