9 week / Stratification / Kang SeoJong (강서종)

1. summary

Layering means placing people in a hierarchy. We focus on economic stratification. That means how they are differentiated according to their wealth or power.
Sociologist Joel Charon suggested some reasons for the continuing inequality in society. First, the rich and the strong protect the system of inequality. Inequality is because the top class uses the power to protect their position and exert influence on other parts. Second, culture teaches acceptance of inequality. Lazy people, for example, are poor because they are lazy, irresponsible or have little to do with, and poverty is the fault of lazy people. This view is an ideology that protects the system of inequality. These ideologies justify the position of the rich and explain and justify the position of the poor. Third, people can accept their position in society. Rich and powerful people socialize with their children, expecting wealth and power. Children are socialized by wealthy parents and accept their position with the wealth of their own parents.
Fourth, police, court, and prison work together to protect the inequality system. Research has shown that the U.S. criminal justice system is biased from beginning to end for the poor, from defining criminal plots to arrests, trials and sentences.
If the conditions that cause this social inequality are viewed as conscious and intentional creation of human behavior, it can be changed to resolve inequality.

2. interesting point

It was interesting that police, courts, and prisons worked hard to protect the inequality system. In my opinion, the police and the court thought they were protecting the weak. In fact, this article does not elaborate on this. So I thought the police, the courts, and the people in prison had high expertise and many people in high social status protected the inequality system to maintain their social status. I thought I'd like a more detailed explanation.

3.discuss

As mentioned above, I do not understand why police, courts and prisons protect the inequality system. My argument, 'The police, the court, has a high level of expertise and social status, so it maintains its social status and protects the inequality system. What do you think about ?
