Q. Is modern democracy really "the will of the people"?

A. I think so. In the past, a new military force centered on Chun Doo Hwan took power.
Therefore, on May 15, 1980, when the new military forces intervened in politics, many people gathered in front of Seoul Station to demand democratization. On May 18, 1980, a massive demonstration in Gwangju called for the restoration of democracy. So, many citizens and students were sacrificed. The same applies to the "June Democracy Movement".Chun Doo Hwan , who was elected president, controlled the media such as newspapers and broadcasting, and oppressed people who demanded democratization, including monitoring students. In response, the public staged a massive protest against the government's coercive rule, calling for a constitutional revision and democratization of the direct presidential election. Finally, the government accepted the needs of students and citizens and announced the June 29 Declaration of Democracy, which included direct presidential election.I think there are now democratic states because of the sacrifices and demonstrations of the people.
