Stratification / week9 / Juhee Cha

1. Summary

Layering refers to placing people hierarchically in society. There are several reasons for the continuing inequality. Let's look at why inequality continues in society presented by sociologist Joel Charon. First, the rich and the strong try to maintain the inequality system. Second, culture teaches acceptance of inequality. Over time, people think that their situation is natural and normal and expect it. Third, people accept their position in society. Finally, police, courts, and prisons work together to protect the inequality system.

2. Interestiong point

It was interesting to know that maintaining inequality in society has been a problem of individual consciousness as well as of exploiting the strong. As time goes by, people accept their position. The 2015 analysis of special district schools in Colombia also showed that the best schools were close to $80000 in housing prices and the worst were located in very low housing prices. And this is taken for granted by individuals. And it was also interesting that police, courts and prisons, which are important institutions of society, maintained inequality. Studies have shown that during the arrest, trial and sentence, the poor were biased.

3. discussion point

I think there are many different classes of society. And I think there's a lot of inequality in each of those classes. Have you ever been involved in an unequal case in your class? Or have you ever seen someone else being unequal because of class?

  1. I don't think inequality is necessarily bad. I think we should think about what causes inequality. The inequality of opportunity is reprehensible, but the inequality of results is necessary.
