Stratification / week9 / Sukyung Song

1. Summary
T-Meaning of stratification
Layering means differentiating between wealth and power. Sociology has studied various kinds of inequalities, including economic grievances, racial and ethnic inequality, and gender inequality. (Non-equality means that people have an unequal approach to scarce and valuable resources.)

-A functional view of stratification

Layering and inequality are necessarily the view that they are helpful to society. Layering and inequality can be seen as possible for people to deploy properly. Anyone with more effort and ability would find it reasonable to get a high degree of reward.
However, in reality, there is a downside that theory does not apply easily or completely.

-A conflictistic view of stratification

It argues that layering is a counter-function and harmful to society. I think layering is a sacrifice to the poor. I think capitalism benefits the rich. I think competition and inequality are not inevitable but created by people.

The classic approach to layering provides an interesting insight into phenomena, structuralism and conflict theory.

-The result of inequality

"There is a difference in medical services."
The rich and educated have better health care than the poor. Poor people have shorter life expectancy and greater risk of chronic disease.

"There is a difference in the level of housing."
Low-income parents are reportedly struggling to find affordable housing.

"There is also a difference in education."

Percentage of countries' populations living below their respective poverty lines.

2. Interesting

We looked at inequality and stratification from a functional and conflict perspective. The difference between functionalism and conflict theory was interesting. Both theories have advantages and disadvantages. So the two theories were supposed to complement each other.

3. Discussion

Why did our society have to be stratified?

  1. I think stratification is a phenomenon caused by capitalism. Capitalism has naturally led to inequality in income. And it makes steady. So I think that stratification has been maintained by capitalism.

  2. I think capital was element of stratification. Because it can gain power through capital and is a means to people's happiness. Racial and gender are not discriminated against when they are rich. So I think money is the root cause of stratification.

  3. I think it's because people have different social status, different economic status, different income levels, different intelligence levels, and different circumstances in which they can produce talents.
