Culture and Religion / Week3 / Kang SeoJong (강서종)

1. summary

Humans have special forms and certain abilities because of biology and genetics. However, these biological characteristics of humans alone cannot define individual humans. So what is needed is culture. Culture is the non-biological or social aspect of human life. These cultures are essentially part of the culture that humans have learned.
Culture includes the symbols of things, the meanings given to them and their symbols, the norms, values, and beliefs prevalent in social life. In certain societies, however, culture is not necessarily strict and completely unified.
Nationalism and cultural relativism exist from a point of view of other cultures.
Nationalism is a tendency to look at the world from the perspective of its culture. On the other hand, cultural relativism means the view that recognizes and understands the diversity of world culture. The two have conflicting views.
Also, to understand our society, we must understand its religion. So sociologists study religion in the same way as studying other social systems such as education and government.
Religion can be defined as the sacred versus superstition provided by Emile Durkheim.
These religions can provide social solidarity, social control, meaning and purpose.
Religion continues to exist in understanding society

2.mention of any new, interesting, or unusual items learned;

Culture can play a role in creating and maintaining social inequality, the article said.
It reminded me of the days when Korea existed in status class. In the Joseon Dynasty, it was the culture of our country that there was a difference between Yangban and Nobi. Yangban should always walk slowly and do it for the public good without taking any self-interest. On the other hand, slaves were not treated as human beings and could not look straight at them. This was our identity-class culture. Because this culture played a major role in representing society, I did not think it was wrong to discriminate against the same human being by status difference in the Joseon Dynasty. I think this cultural function is great but also scary.
A society that has shaped the wrong culture will collapse.

3.Discussion Point

Grifford points out that culture may seem to come from individuals.
He also argues that culture changes through dependent and social behavior.
So, what can be said to support Grisong's claim?

  1. I think it's true that our culture is proud and good, but the culture of class society itself is wrong. Of course, it was only natural in those days.
