Introduction to Sociology/Deviance / Week 7 /문수빈(Soo Bin Moon)

Summary:

Since norms are relative to culture, departure is relative. Therefore, there is a cultural difference in the act of deviating from the law and the act of deviating from manners and manners.
Robert K. Multon explained that there are five types of deviations in suitability, innovation, rejection of legitimate means, (retreat) rituals, and revolts in deviance. And that deviance is breaking one of norms to receive and pursue one norm.
When functionalist approaches are taken, deviations allow us to distinguish the boundaries between what people can and can not do, and deviations from the functionalist approach allow norms to change by restoring the imbalance of social equilibrium over time.
Deviations can reflect the power imbalance, impairing the crime of the poor and reducing the likelihood that the rich will be punished.

The labeling theory shows the concept that when an exclusivity label, such as a lonely one, is applied to them, and when the label is adopted by showing the behavior and attitude associated with the label, the individual is discarded.
Crime statistics show that America has a high rate of recidivism and the United States has the highest population of prison population in the total population. It also explains that tattoos, violent games and images, and the rape on campus on campus are linked to deviations.

What was interesting/What did we learn:

I was curious that deviations are differently accepted in different cultures. And it was also interesting that deviations, when viewed from the functionalist point of view, cause changes in norms. In fact, the range of deviations that people think about changes with time. Though the range of change that is legally judged is narrow, the range of deviation is more fluid, which is an idiosyncratic behavior that deviates from the courtesy of thinking in a society's culture. For example, in the past, Korea did not regard smoking as a deviant behavior in public places, but nowadays it is more aware of the health of the individual and the perception that smoking is harmful. The amount of money that I think and legally fines is also growing.

Discussion point:

From a functional point of view, deviations lead to changes in norms. And deviations will depend on the times. I thought smoking was an example. Do you think that in addition to smoking, what acts have been accepted as an act of deviance according to changes in the perception of the times?

  1. I can think a lot about that such as aggressive, irritable, resentful. Performance related to classroom learning, such as inattentiveness and indolence; Reactions related to the handling of affairs, such as withdrawal or timidity. There are even more serious moral problems, such as theft, intentional injury.

  2. I want to cite an example of cyber. The computer age has come as the times have changed, and many people have begun playing computer games. However, as they became addicted to games, addicts actually killed people without being able to distinguish between virtual and real life, and they became violent to people around them.
