Stratification / Week 9 / Inwoo Hwang

Summary

Stratification means separating people into different strata through various ways such as economy, power structure, etc. Structuralism claims that stratification helps to maintain society, and argues that human beings are stratified to have a status corresponding to their abilities. In other words, the higher classes of human beings have special abilities, which means they can receive and control more rewards than the lower classes. But the theory of conflict argues that stratification is bad for social maintenance. According to conflict theory, stratification benefits only a minority and promotes inequality.

What was interesting/what did you learn

When I saw that the rate of religion was low in the developed countries, various hypotheses were thought and I tried to investigate in various ways, but it is hard to find a meaningful hypothesis.

Discussion Point

Why do the dependence on religion decrease as the wealth of the nation increases?
