Race and Ethnicity / WEEK 10 / 배찬형 Bae Chanhyeong

1. Summary

Race is the physical classification of man. It is rooted in the biological classification of humans and classified according to their morphological characteristics. Ethnic and ethnicity are related, but ethnicity refers to the social characteristics shared by mankind. Examples include nationality, tribe, religion, language, culture, and tradition.
One of the things scientists argued about race in the 19th century said is that race is a valid scientific category that can be used to describe and predict individual behavior. These arguments account for the benefits of classifying race.
Clustering research is controversial, but it verifies the nature of biological and genetic explanations for race, racism, racial similarities and differences.
Each race has different characteristics. However, such traits are biased and discriminatory. People are fired for race and refused entry. Racism has so many differentiators, such as structure, culture, history, etc.
While there are efforts to change perception to reduce racial discrimination, discrimination due to inequality is still prevalent.

2. Interesting point

In a table describing the different racial and ethnic classifications used in the U.S. census, only Chinese and Japanese were categorized as different races until the 1920s, but by the 1930s, Koreans were also classified as different races. I found it interesting to show that race is socially constructed. It is also part of the belief that the slave mother's half-blood system also shows human self-interest to focus on the wealth and power of a certain population. I don't think it should be repeated to hold, detain and possess certain races as slaves. I don't practice slavery by race now, but I still think discrimination exists. Therefore, I think there should be a change of perception to prevent further racial discrimination.

3. discussion

There are practices that benefit certain races at universities and workplaces to give opportunities and create an equal atmosphere for people who have historically been discriminated against. It provides opportunities for success to those who don't have the privilege and can overcome historical imbalances, but it may seem like reverse discrimination. What do you think about this?
