Startification/ Week9/ ji eun Bang

1. Summary
Economic inequality is the hierarchical arrangement of people in society according to wealth or power. Power, wealth, and fame are there to represent someone's social class or socioeconomic status. The inequality began with a stocky society. Because humans have begun to settle down and new labor has led to surplus wealth and some have accumulated more wealth than others.
Why do poor countries keep poor?
A poor society maintains a poor society because it maintains its traditional attitudes and beliefs, technologies and institutions, such as the traditional economic system and government style. In contrast, rich countries have helped modern technology and national development under capitalism and brought about modern systems with higher living standards. In the end, the poverty reduction in poor countries requires great economic growth.

2. What did you learn? interesting?
The inequalities are not resolved but rather worse. Because a rich and strong country rather continues the system of inequality and protects the law. In modern society, the rich pass on their offspring or power to their descendants. The rich and hard-liners have control over the economic means of production.
And culture teaches acceptance of inequality. Some people think that inequality is fair. Poor people think they are poor because they are lazy or irresponsible. The belief that hard work can be done supports inequality.
And people can take their place in society. The rich and powerful socialize their children. With children from wealthy families receiving the best education, wealth continues for generations.

3.Discussion
Even if somebody work hard, they may not be able to escape poverty because of the environment or discrimination. Also as mentioned above, wealth is most likely to lead to generations.
How can we actually decrease the gap in inequality in this reality?

  1. I think the country should increase welfare for the lower classes. We should make such a policy that takes more taxes for the upper class and considers the lower classes more through income redistribution policies, etc.
