Race_and_Ethnicity /Week 10/ ji eun Bang

1.Summary

Race is not a physical trait but a social trait shared by mankind. Social characteristics that are frequently used in classification include nationality, lack, religious belief, a shared language, common culture, and traditional sharing. Racial classifications were different from country to country. The fact that classification has changed over time shows that race is socially constructed.
Because there are genetic differences between races, the frequency of diseases varies between races and races.

2. What did you learn? / interesting

Racism often occurs because of its diversity. Racism is seen by many as an insult to basic human dignity and human rights violations. The expression of racism is divided into individual level racism, structural racism, cultural racism, historical racism,color-blind racism, genocide.
Individual-level racism is a bias, prejudice, or discrimination that appears when two or more people interact. The example is the resistance of Americans to classify even a single drop of black ancestors as white people. Structural racism refers to inequality built into an organization or system. For example, Asian-Americans face discrimination in achieving leadership positions in companies.
Among them, historical racism is a form of inequality caused by racial discrimination of the past generation, affecting the current generation through deficits in formal education and a lack of preparation of parents, primarily unconscious racial attitudes. This is represented by the "mistakness" of social history by educational, political and economic elite.
The picture shows how historical racism has reduced the chances of intergenerational prosperity, reducing the net worth of racial and ethnic minorities in the United States.

3. Discussion

Race is a physical difference in humans, which is considered to be different in some way from other people, depending on their actuality or imagination. However, perceived differences have negative consequences of producing and maintaining racism around the world.
What do you think we should do to eliminate racism?
