An example of modern conflict theory is social stratification first. As civilization changed from farming villages to industrial societies, a social class emerged that effectively created a unique class of wealth, power and prestige. Therefore, it is said that the ordinary classes maintain power and that all other promotions are economically disadvantaged, give up their rights, and perpetuate a nearly powerless regime.

The top 20 percent of Americans own 85 percent of the wealth in the country, while the other 80 percent own only 15 percent.
