Introduction to sociology/ week 1/ Jungah Kim

1.summary
'Sociology' includes a wide range of meaning. It handels about general social crisis, interaction between people and also common culture. Based on past events, we should predict how society will change.
About this problem, sociologist 'Mills' suggest using sociological imagination.
He claims that sociological imagination will help people see society from a wide perspective.
2. what is intersting / what did you learn
While I read this lecture, I was interested about the fact that society does not change as the times go.
Not because of time, but society changes by the impact of historical incident (for example industrial revolution) or technology or some else.

Before I read this lecture, I just thought that sociology only means general social problem, relationship between people or about rules that people have to obey.
But after I read this lecture, I learn that the term 'sociology' not only includes social structure and activity but also used in government policies.

3. discussion point
Although sociologist study enough about past event and research about current society, they sometimes fail predicting about how the society will change or
how people will behave and think about some event. I think it is because of subjective values. Then can sociology be studied objectively ? Does it mean anything if our social imagination is sometimes wrong?

  1. I don't think all sociology is objective. Because society is a world of people with different opinions and understanding it is also people with different opinions.

  2. I think sociology cannot be objective. The view of society is different not only for the general public but also for sociologists. When we study sociology, we should compare and analyze the studies of each scholar, and in this process we will certainly have an individual's principal.
