Culture and Religion / Week 3 / Angela Wibowo

BLOG 3 : INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLOGY, CULTURE AND RELIGION
Summary :
In sociology, it is related to culture, because culture can affect human relation and society life. It is not talking about ourself with genetic or nature way, but it is talking about the environment or nurture way to affect individu or some group, and culture is a part of the evirontment, which is affect the society of one group. According to the article, there are two function of culture. According to the article, the first is from Griswold. He said that culture can have a certain utilitarian function (the maintenance of order as the result of shared understanding and meanings). The second function is from Collins. He said that culture may be used to explain and justify the society level pattern of oppression and privilege by allowing peoples to believe the existing inequalities that reflect the way things have always been.
Sociology is related with religion too. In religion sometimes there are so many things that we have to do and sometimes it depends on the religion that we have and believe. For example catholic religion, it is said that we have to be a kind person, to love each other, bring peace to other people and others. This is affect our behavior and how we interact with other people. There are so many definition about religion and their existence too.

What was Interesting / What did you learn?
After I read the articles, I’m really interested especially about sects in religion topics. I found it really interesting because, there is a statement about leader of sectarian movement that come from a lowes socio-economis class that the members of the parent denomination, and about the formation of the sects can take only three paths, dissolution, institutionalization, or eventual development into a denomination. This topic attract my attention when I read it.

Discussion point :
I’m curious about nature and  nurture, which affect the individu or groups. I have one question. What if our behavior is similar with our parents. Is it nature or nurture?

  1. I found your article really interesting. I think nature and nurture is both important as they have their own importance in a person life.

  2. Answering your questions, i think it is nurture. Kids do what they see. It is the time when they judge something as wrong or right.
