family/week13/Ami Kim

1.       Summary

A family is usually a parent, a brother, a sister, or a spouse. However, there are so many variations in the family today that the basic concept of family is questioned. So, these days, animals such as cats and dogs also accept the concept of family. In view of this, families vary in form and function. The present state of the family depends on the culture. The most common form in the Western world is monogamy, and in other countries polygamy exists. Or they don't get married because of their beliefs and religious beliefs. Also, the structure of the family changes over time, with the emergence of a host society in an agricultural-based society, marriage has changed to economic and political relationships. In ancient Rome, a father-centered family structure was formed. Modern family structures and marriages in the West have been rooted in Christian philosophy and practice, leading to the emergence of nuclear families. There are also inequalities in gender, race, ethnicity, and religion. These families develop anew, and the latest trend to show the changing nature of the family is single-parent families, cohabitation, or homosexuality.

2. What is interesting / what did you learn

What was interesting was about divorce. Many studies have been done on divorce, and most researchers believe women are disadvantaged by the ease of divorce. They say that when divorce is an option, women are reluctant to seek change in their marriage when it can feel unstable. The change here refers to divorce and contrary to this opinion, a Yodanis argued that the ease of divorce increases the equality of women in their marriage. I think the appearance of today's society coincides with that of Yodanis.

3.       Discussion point

These days, various types of families are occurring. So, do you think gay marriage should be legalized? If legalized, what do you think about the adoption of a child?
