Socialization / Week 6 / Seoryoung Park

1.Summary

Socialization is the transfer of society's culture from generation to generation. It is a process of changing one's behavior to match social expectations. It formed first in a family or a neighborhood. After that, socialization is done in a more complex and diverse relationship. Socialization performs the function of diversifying individuals and integrating them into society. Socialization is affected by the influence of the surrounding area and by the innate disposition. According to Arnett, socialization is narrow and broad. There are also differences in socialization by gender. Socialization is explained by various theories. There are interaction theories, role theories, and reinforcement theories. Socialization shows different results depending on the group or location in which it belongs, according to various studies. Socialization shows different forms depending on culture.

2. What was interesting / What did you learn

It was interesting to note that socialization varied depending on the group in which it belonged. I knew, of course, that thoughts and actions varied depending on the group they belonged to, but it was amazing that self-fulfilling predictions changed. For example, psychologists Rosenthal, R. & Jacobson, L. : "Pygmalion in the classroom." This experiment is about how teachers' perception of students affects them. The student, who is recognized as a smart child to his teacher, had a higher IQ at the end of the semester.

3. Discussion Point

From the perspective of "Do College Preparation Classes Make a Difference?" and "Pygmalion in the classroom", Isn't the university hierarchy branding students who enter society? I want to discuss how university rankings work in society.
