Socialization/week6/Ami Kim

1.       Summary

Socialization is a fundamental sociological concept consisting of several factors. The goal of socialization is to control the development of impulse control and conscience, the preparation and performance of roles in institutions such as career role and marriage and parent role, and the process of importance, value, and meaning of life, i.e. Socialization is generally divided into two parts: primary and secondary socialization, most social scientists argue that an individual's basic or core identity occurs in the process of primary socialization and specific changes occur in secondary socialization. Arnett also explains that while distinguishing between broad and narrow socialization, understanding of it should not be understood with only two choices. Not all socialization is voluntary or successful, of course. Hospitals or specific institutions were formed to re-socialize unsocialized individuals. Research has continued to develop over time to study this socialization, and recently studies have shown that human children are wired up to accurately imitate adult roles, including behaviors that are not practical. Socialization is necessary enough to be observed among humans, but it varies greatly culturally, meaning that the process and outcome vary depending on the culture.

2.       What is interesting / what did you learn

In the past, I thought that no matter how children grow up among animals, no matter how much they behave like them, if they come to the world of human life, they can live like humans again. However, the child is often mentally disabled and can hardly overcome learning language and upright walking. Therefore, it is very difficult to socialize very young isolated children into relatively normal social members. I learned this, that socialization should be done at a very young age, and that the importance of socialization was known.

3.       Discussion point

Do you think socialization can fail?

  1. Have you seen movie “the boy wolf”? The main character, Song Joong-ki, was a man who grew up under a wolf. His behavior was more like a wolf than a human. He had difficulty interacting with humans.
Of course, the example above is not a good comparison because it is a movie. However, many cases abroad can actually exist. They may return to society, but most cannot. Isn't this the failure of socialization?

  2. I think that socialization may fail.
People adapt to society through socialization, but they adapt with their own nature.
So I think there are times when people fail to socialize because it depends on their nature to adapt to society.

  3. I think socialization can fail. This is because each individual has a different degree of acceptance of socialization, and socialization can be made in a way that is incompatible with the situation and the age. I think that socialization should be done in accordance with the times and circumstances, because socialization can be based on living in harmony with people and living in harmony with society.
