Week 13 / Family and Aging / Kiara Juliane Annsia

1.     Summary :
Family is a concept that everyone in this world know, but how can we define family in a sociological perspective? According to the sociologist family is an intimate domestic group of people related to one another by bonds of blood, sexual mating, or legal ties. Family is the first and primary source of socialization that a children met through out their life. Children learn to play his/her role in the society by socializing in their family first . In the family they learn basic values and norms of the culture they have to adapt later when they join in the society later. From the perspective of biology, family function is to reproduce society through pro-recreation.
A family is made through a marriage that happened between two people. Marriage is a governmentally, socially, or recognize relationship that is often created as form of contract. Almost in every society have their own type of marriage, usually it is taboo to married your own family but in a certain tribe or kingdom (e.g: ancient Egypt) they prefer to marry their own family to keep the lineage pure.
The next topic that we’re going to talk about is about aging. As a human is practically impossible for someone to not getting older and stay the same. Aging is a biological and also a sociological process where a human accomplish a stages of biological and social maturation. The term old and young is a common terms that used for determining someone’s maturity and age.

2.     What did you learn/what did you find interesting?
I think that is quite interesting that family is actually not as simple as we used to think it is. It’s not only about mother father and kids but also a relationship and a connection that make people a family.

3.     Point of discussion :

When we talk about marriage the first thing that usually come up to our mind is a relationship between man and women. But as the world is getting more open with different sexual orientation, many country has already legalized the same sex marriage. This of course would follow by the rejection of people who doesn’t think that marriage between the same sex is right. My question is, in the future would it be possible to normalize a same sex marriage? Or is it simply impossible to do?

  1. It is surely a possible thing to do. In 2015, United States Supreme Court lifted same-sex marriage ban which lead to a marriage equality in 50 states. This is one of the major steps to normalize same-sex marriage perspective in our society. Even though now it only happen in US, but a lot of LGBTQ+ community are bolder to speak their own voice
