Blog 4 / Economic Globalization : Coorporation / Kiara Juliane Annisa

SOCIOLOGY OF GLOBALIZATION (4)

ECONOMIC GLOBALIZATION: COORPORATION
By : Peter Dicken

There’s a stereotype that many people believe, which that In this era people are leaving in the world where global corporation is increasing, and it’s not only in one’s country but also across the national boundaries, weakening the autonomy and independence of a nation. But this stereotype is not true at all. In this chapter the writer are going to summarize why the stereotype above are misleading and trying to explain it in  different chapter that contains of the scale and geographical distribution of TNC’s in the global economy ; why and how corporations engage in transnational activities ; the geographical embeddedness of transnational corporations ; the ‘webs of enterprise’ manifested in transnational production network ; the power relationships between TNC’s and other actors in the global economy.

1.     The Scale and Geographical Distribution of Transnational Corporations

In the 1914, many United States, United Kingdom , and some European manufacturing company become highly transnationalized. From that the past 50 years the number of TNC’s in the world economy has grown fast. TNC itself stands for transnational corporation, which in the modern world sometimes defined as ‘a firm which has the power to coordinate and control operations in more than one country, even if it does not own them’. But this data is hard to measure as it is involves a number of qualitative attributes. In aggregate terms, TNC activity is measured using statistics on FDI (foreign direct investment). The difference between ‘direct’ investment and ‘foreign’ investment is that ‘direct’ investment is an investment by one firm in another with the intentions of gaining control over that firm’s. meanwhile ‘foreign’ direct investment is a direct investment that happens across the nation.

Why and how firms ‘transnationalize’
The motivations of firm to extend their business reach can be categorized by 2 type which is ;
a.     Market-oriented Investment :
The reason why there are business firm to broad their market is because of the market potential. The business firm might didn’t do well in their own country (domestically) thus why they try to open their business across the national border in order to get more potential consumers.
b.     Asset-oriented Investment :
The geographical unevenness of market is one of the main reason why business firm need to do a transnational investment. And the second reason is the fact that they need to produce and sell their products but the service merit is also unevenly distributed thus why they have to do transnational investment.

There are 2 way a firm can develop its transnational activities, which is by a ‘greenfield’ investment which is building a whole new facilities and the other one is through engagement with other firm through merger acquisition or some form of strategic collaboration.
2.     Geography Matters; The Embeddedness of Transnational Corporations
Every business firm are produced with a very complicated process of infusing the cognitive, cultural, social, politic and economic characteristics of the national home base play a dominant part. Despite the unquestioned geographical change of the world economy, pushed by the widen activities of transnational corporations, we are still not witnessing the merging of business-organizational forms towards a single ‘placeless’ type.

3.     ‘Webs of Enterprise’ : Transnational Production Networks
All business firms are formed with a highly complex and dynamic networks of production, distribution and consumption and coordinated mainly by a transnational corporation, therefore, like firms in general, can be considered as ‘a dense network at the center of a web of relationship’. But TNC are more difficult to coordinate and control than firms that activities focused on a single national space. TNC required more up-to-date organizational architecture. Many elements has been participating in the TNC’s organizational architecture such as developments in transportation and communications technologies, as well as in production process technology in order for TNC to be able to differentiate it’s function well.

Transnational production networks organized the regional scale (mainly Europe, North America and East Asia). TNC’s power are based on their potential ability to take advantage of geographical differences in the availability and cost of resources and in state policies and to switch and re-switch operations between location. But there’s also a negative side of this power, as it’s often caused some very shaky generalizations.

Extra posting : What kind of changes are needed for more equality? / Kiara Juliane Annisa

  1. Actually listen to the voice of minority, for this case women.
Women's voice usually are brushed off by the society because they don't see it as something important. It is hard for women to raise their voice and actually give of their opinion in many occasion.
  1. Stop child marriage and sexual harassment
Child marriage and sexual harassment are something that is really common. The idea of women being oppressed since they were a little, and did not get the rights that they have is making it harder for women to actually seen in the society.
  1. Make education gender sensitive
Teaching children about the gender and how they have to treat each other is really important. Because sometimes child are occupied by the traditional view they have in their household, so it would be nice to actually teach about it in the educational system
  1. Give proper value to women's work
There are many women who already work but they are viewed negatively and most of the time, not appreciated. Jobs like cleaner, laundry women, maid, are usually a job that is done by a women but people see them as someone lower than those people. Another example is when women actually hold a high position in a company but her wage is lower than a male who's position is lower than her.
  1. Stop the violence to women

Violence is something that is not rarely heard. It happens so often especially to girls. And society usually blame it on the women or more worst, doesn't care about it at all. Just because the victim is a women. This kind of things makes women scared to work and stand up for themselves.

Extra posting : Is there ethnic cleansing or genocide happening today? If so, where? / Kiara Juliane Annisa

One of the most talked genocide issue by the world today are the genocide of Rohingya ethnic by Myanmar military. The issue was highlighted in the late 2016 when the military started to killed rohingya ethnic people. Rohingya ethnic itself origin from burma who resides in Rakhine, Myanmar (previously burma). United nation already appointed this issue as a genocide but the leader of Myanmar, Aung Sang Suu Kyi, still denied to call this a genocide and keep silent about this issue. Rohingya people are started to move to save themselves to the neighboring country such as thailand, bangladesh, malaysia, and Indonesia. Thus why this issue is especially noticed in my country.

Extra posting : Do you think this could happen? / Kiara Juliane Annisa

Some theorist argue that the growing inequality in society, makes it possible for charismatic and revolution to appear. Do you think this could happen?
I think that it is really possible that in this era a charismatic leader would appear and lead a revolution. Because the inequality in our country is really visible, and everyone could notice the differences between people in society.

The people from lower class started to blame the president saying that what they felt in their life is because of his incompetence of his government, and suddenly there is this one man who is a leader of an Islamic organization that lead a movement using a religion as a shield to invite people from lower class to protest.

Extra Posting : What is the meaning of yellow ribbon?/ Kiara Juliane Annisa

Yellow ribbon symbolize hope and solidarity. The history of yellow ribbon itself can be traced in the war time. It started when the gulf war happened and united states began sending large number of troops to the middle east. Ribbon itself is already been used as a symbol of goodbye. Back during the times of heyday in the British empire, soldiers have  to part with the people that they love and as the ship is pulled away they will throw ribbon from the ship as a way of saying "bon voyage' or goodbye.

In Indonesia itself yellow ribbon is used as a symbol to show solidarity and sympathy for the victims of the May 1998 riot of Indonesia. The riots was triggered by economics problem and the main target is Chinese ethnicity.

Week 14 / Demography / Kiara Juliane Annisa

1.     Summary :
Based on the oxford definition demography is the study of statistics such as births, deaths, incomes, or incidence of disease, which illustrate the changing structures of human population. Why is it important to study demography? By studying the demography of this world, it would be easier to find a cause that is related to population such as death and birth. It is also reaching to the possibilities to find a cause of a social phenomena (e.g: world war). The indicators that we can used to determine a demography is birth and death rates (known as fertility and mortality). Fertility in demography referring to the ability of women to produce a child, meanwhile mortality refers the nature of human which is death.
There is 2 methods to determine a demography which is direct and indirect methods. Direct methods collected from the tracks of all births and death in the population of a country. Another common method that is used to count the demography is to perform a census. Census is an official count or survey of a population, typically recording various details of individual (dictionary). Meanwhile on the other hand indirect method is they only ask one person in the family about the whole family and not actually collect the data from each individuals.

2.     What did you learn / what did you find interesting :
I think that it’s really interesting that we conduct a counting of almost every human being in this world. And the fact that the result of it beneficial to many things, is really helpful. We can find many things from the demographic data that are already collected before and used it to answer a social phenomenon or other things.

3.     Point of discussion :

As I read about this topics, I found out that the census method is quite hard to do. Because the officials have to meet the person one by one and it would took a very long time to see the result. Is It possible that in the future we can collect the demographic data with an easier method?

Week 13 / Family and Aging / Kiara Juliane Annsia

1.     Summary :
Family is a concept that everyone in this world know, but how can we define family in a sociological perspective? According to the sociologist family is an intimate domestic group of people related to one another by bonds of blood, sexual mating, or legal ties. Family is the first and primary source of socialization that a children met through out their life. Children learn to play his/her role in the society by socializing in their family first . In the family they learn basic values and norms of the culture they have to adapt later when they join in the society later. From the perspective of biology, family function is to reproduce society through pro-recreation.
A family is made through a marriage that happened between two people. Marriage is a governmentally, socially, or recognize relationship that is often created as form of contract. Almost in every society have their own type of marriage, usually it is taboo to married your own family but in a certain tribe or kingdom (e.g: ancient Egypt) they prefer to marry their own family to keep the lineage pure.
The next topic that we’re going to talk about is about aging. As a human is practically impossible for someone to not getting older and stay the same. Aging is a biological and also a sociological process where a human accomplish a stages of biological and social maturation. The term old and young is a common terms that used for determining someone’s maturity and age.

2.     What did you learn/what did you find interesting?
I think that is quite interesting that family is actually not as simple as we used to think it is. It’s not only about mother father and kids but also a relationship and a connection that make people a family.

3.     Point of discussion :

When we talk about marriage the first thing that usually come up to our mind is a relationship between man and women. But as the world is getting more open with different sexual orientation, many country has already legalized the same sex marriage. This of course would follow by the rejection of people who doesn’t think that marriage between the same sex is right. My question is, in the future would it be possible to normalize a same sex marriage? Or is it simply impossible to do?
