Demography / Week14 / Kwon Ah Yeon

1. summary

Sociology is the study of predicting the future through current data. Among them, I think demographics are the most powerful tool to predict the future. Population statistics do not simply analyze age, sex, race, and region to measure population, but they predict the future by analyzing various outcomes and factors that have been going on so far. Through this prediction, we are preparing for an aging society and taking measures against youth unemployment. Population statistics have become an indispensable factor to see how future economies will change.
The study of the human population is rooted in social changes, including the Industrial Revolution. Most modern population surveys began in the late 18th century. Demographic statistics rely primarily on large data derived from registration statistics. Large data over a long period of time tracks trends in population metrics such as birth and death rates. The most important thing in demographics is the change in population. This is because these demographic change factors can recognize changes in social patterns.

2. What is interesting

It was interesting that one of the most powerful factors affecting the birth rate was the level of education for women. Higher education levels mean lower birthrates, which is also associated with the use of contraceptives. Also, the higher the education level, the more women try to avoid playing the role of their parents by choosing a job rather than getting married.

3. Discussion Point

I don't think an increase in birth rates is necessarily a good thing. Of course there will be many advantages as the population increases. However, there are many structural problems that need to be solved, including many obstacles and limitations that women experience by giving birth, and not a few costs of raising children. Currently, our country is trying to raise the birth rate. What steps should be taken to ensure that the improvement of these structural problems is active?
