Socialization / Week 6 / Kiara Juliane Annisa

1.     Summary :

Based on what I read from various source, socialization is a way or form of process to embody an idea on an individu. In order for an individu to understand and prepare something especially if it’s connected to society, it usually takes a socialization to make them understand. It could also seen as a preventive measure in some issue. Socialization also means a way for someone to be a part of society or a group, because as we all know human is a social being.

There are 3 goals of socialization based on Arnett (a professor in the department of psychology at Clark University in Massachusetts) believe as the goals and role of socialization for an individu to be prepared to get involved in a society :

1.     Impulse control and the development of a conscience

2.     Role preparation and performance, including occupational roles, gender roles, and roles in institution such as marriage and parenthood

3.     The cultivation of sources of meaning, or what is important, valued, and to be lived for

There are 2 parts of socialization that occurs in someone’s life. one is primary socialization where it takes place in an individual early life that usually happened around their family or friend circles that shapes their identity, personality and behavior. And the other one is secondary socialization where it takes place through the whole life. In the secondary socialization an individu is getting to understand their role in a society and eventually will be part of it.

2.     What was interesting/what did you learn :

While reading the materials I see that there are stages that occurs in the socialization process, which is made up of 5 stage ; Investigation, Socialization, Maintenance, Resocialization, and Remembrance. I did not know at first that it takes so many time and steps to becoming a part of group/society.

3. Discussion point :

As I mention above there are two parts of socialization, the primary and secondary parts. While both of them is having a different role in preparing an individu to become part of a society, I want to know which one is more important and fundamental? Do they have a same portion in an individu’s life? Or one of it have a more major role in individu's life?
