Sociological Methods / Week 2 / hayoung lee

1. Summary

Sociology, like natural science, can be studied in scientific ways. Sociology is trusted when there is reliable evidence like scientific research. However, sociology is not as clear in causality as in natural science. Therefore, when studying sociology, we use quantitative studies that are digitized and qualitative studies that understand people and societies that cannot be quantified. Since human behavior and social phenomena are areas that cannot be studied simply by quantification, further research and understanding are essential. So sociology is available through mutual complementing of quantitative and qualitative studies.

2. What was interesting/ what did you learn?

I thought natural science and sociology had little in common. But they were quite similar in many ways, and the way they studied was also similar. I thought that we could not digitize humans and society, and that we could not study sociology in a scientific way. However, it was interesting that a scientific method of study was essential to social sociology.

3. Discussion point

As times change, there will be social phenomena that we cannot experience in the future, can they be reliable if analyzed through existing quantitative and qualitative studies?
